The Glenn W. Levey Middle School (Southfield, Michigan) is a Southfield Public School (SPS), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Middle School as well as a “National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.” Our mission is for all students to learn successfully to the best of their ability in an environment conducive to social, intellectual, and personal development. Dr. Rita Teague has been in the field education for over 30 years. She has served in various capacities, including classroom teacher, department head, and assistant principal. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Policy and Leadership, which makes her well prepared for the role of Levey’s Principal. Our Band Director, Jeffrey D. Smith, Sr., has 22 years of experience in music instruction, teaching with Detroit Public Schools (DPS) for 15 years, Director of Bands at Laura F. Osborn HS for ten years and five years at Brenda M. Scott MS. He is a product of DPS, graduate of Grambling and Wayne State Universities, and a member of various Professional and Fraternal Organizations. He is the recipient of many accolades, including:
« Wayne RESA Achievement Award
« SPS Founder’s Day Award
« Middle School Teacher of the Year
« MSBOA District 15 Band Teacher of the Year
« Detroit Pistons Game Changer
Since Mr. Smith’s arrival to Levey in 2009, we have raised over $80,000 in annual fundraisers. He has developed and maintained a 150 plus piece instrumental music program and band parent organization. The Jaguars Band Program is an all-inclusive music program welcoming students with special needs. In the last five years, we have attended Music Festivals in both Orlando, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia. In 2010, we travelled to Orlando, with 97 students and their chaperones. We returned with three first place trophies during the five-day trip. In 2011, the Jaguars travelled to Atlanta and successfully won first place honors. In 2012-2014, the Band brought back a total of 26 trophies from the Orlando Festivals. This past April 2015, the Jaguars attended the Atlanta Music Festival returning with three first place trophies in Marching Band, Percussion and Dance Line.
The Jaguars perform and compete several times throughout each school year, including:
« Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA)
« Back-to-School Rallies
« North End Youth Improvement Council Adopt-A-Child Christmas Program (Cobo Hall)
« Detroit Police Athletic League Football Championship (Ford Field)
« Annual Band-O-Rama
Band students also attend music camps such as the Beverly Thomas Fine Arts Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Starving Artist Camp and other music and academic camps during the summer. The Levey Music Program also includes additional performance groups (Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Solo & Ensemble, and Strings). The Jazz Band performs at more than eight events per year. We are honored to have made history as the first ever middle school to march in the America’s Thanksgiving Parade, this past November 26, 2015. We welcome your attendance any of our performances throughout the year to see the dedication and enthusiasm of these young children.
